Cytometry Test Detects Early Lung Cancer

A new test developed to aid the detection of lung cancer shows promise of early detection of the disease with few false-positives. The test was introduced at the 10th World Conference on Lung Cancer in Vancouver (Canada).

The test, automated quantitative cytometry (AQC), is based on a computerized technology platform that analyzes digital images of thousands of epithelial cell nuclei from induced sputum and quantifies malignancy-associated changes by measuring more than 100 nuclear features for each cell. These measurements are correlated with patterns associated with lung cancer at its various stages. Field studies show that the test can detect lung cancer even in stages 0 and 1, when the chance of survival is over 70%. Today the disease is detected when survival is about 15%.

"The AQC MAC test has all the important characteristics of a practical cancer detection method,” said James Dao, president and CEO of Genyous Diagnostics (Vancouver, Canada; www.genyous.com). "It is noninvasive, affordable, able to detect early stage disease, and has a low false-positive rate.” The test is being developed by Perceptronix Medical, Inc., a subsidiary of Genyous.
