Mobile Dictation Unit for Doctors

A new mobile dictation system allows doctors and other clinicians to receive patient lists, dictate notes, and automatically distribute dictation for transcription directly from a handheld computing device from any location.

Following transcription, the system, called VoiceScript Mobile, combines with ESA Mobile, which allows users to review, edit, and sign documents for inclusion in a patient's chart. Patient lists are obtained by synchronizing the handheld device with the hospital's information network through a LAN/WAN or wireless network. Doctors can display the list either by census or by dictation chart deficiencies. At any time, the doctor may choose a patient from the list and dictate that patient's report into the personal digital assistant (PDA). Accurate and complete patient demographic information is attached to each report. When doctors return to the hospital, they resynchronize the device and the audio files are automatically routed to the appropriate transcriptionist. When these documents are completed, users can also receive the documents on their handheld device for review, edit, approval, and electronic signature.

VoiceScript Mobile and ESA Mobile were developed by SoftMed Systems, Inc. (Washington, DC, USA). "Not only is it convenient, but the flexibility to dictate and distribute patient notes anywhere, anytime makes the flow of information more efficient, and hospitals are able to provide patients with better quality care,” said Don Segal, CEO of SoftMed Systems.
