New Software for Pediatric Radiology

New software for computed radiology (CR) systems is specially designed for pediatric use, offering low radiation dose and improved image quality.

The software can keep radiation exposure levels low and can even reduce them slightly while still maintaining excellent image quality, according to Agfa-Gevaert Ltd. (Mortsel, Belgium), the developer of the software for its ADC compact CR systems. Image manipulation can compensate for over- or under-exposure and reduce the number of retakes required. The software achieves its good image quality with the use of multiscale image contrast amplification (MUSICA).

The first U.K. installation of the ADC Compact CR system with the new software was made in the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Brentford. The system will also be linked to monitors in the Intensive Care Unit, enabling images to be viewed as soon as they are acquired. "The new Agfa equipment will give us the capability to produce all radiology images digitally, and enables us to move one step closer to a fully CR and PACS system,” said Sue Taylor, business manager of the hospital.
