Gel Technology Enhances Sleep Apnea Patient Comfort

A gel-based cushion offers simplicity and exceptional seal and comfort in full-face mask continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

The Amara gel cushion offers another option for the Amara facemask, using the same snap-in fit of current silicone cushions, which can interchangeably snap into the same modular frame. The dual option cushion specification allows patients to choose the type of comfort they prefer, making the patient’s introduction to CPAP therapy easier when a full facemask can be challenging. By providing two cushion options, patients and clinicians have two chances at successful outcomes on one mask system. The cushion comes off with one click for cleaning, and snaps back into place easily.

The Amara full-face mask, a product of Philips Healthcare (Dan Best, The Netherlands), offers reduced weight and a slimline frame that eliminates pressure on the face and drag on the headgear, so that it feels lighter to wear and is less susceptible to leaks. The mask has only four parts, making it is easy to clean and maintain, with simple adjustment mechanisms. The headgear is soft and sturdy with inlaid tabs for convenience in gripping, and the quick release talon clips are easy to put on and take off with a simple snap.

“Amara is part of 'The Answer,' our innovative portfolio of masks and services designed to promote healthier patients, healthier businesses, and healthier practices,” said John Frank, senior vice president of Philips Home Healthcare Solutions. “We want to elevate patient and provider satisfaction of our most successful full face mask. The new gel cushion gives patients the ability to customize their experience, while achieving the performance Amara is known for.”

CPAP is the use of continuous, constant flow of air to maintain a continuous level of positive airway pressure. CPAP typically is used for people who have breathing problems, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in which the mild pressure from CPAP prevents the airway from collapsing or becoming blocked.
