A new electronic stethoscope has the ability to amplify sound 14 times greater than a traditional acoustic scope, allowing doctors to customize their use to suit the clinical setting and the patient's size and condition.

The stethoscope features enhanced filtering circuitry that reduces ambient noise pick-up and results in exceptional sound quality, allowing a doctor to clarify and differentiate heart and other biologic sounds, according to the developer, Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands). An ergonomic, rugged design makes the stethoscope easy to use.

"The Philips Electronic Stethoscope makes auscultation easier and more dependable,” said Dr. Richard Daum, assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston, MA, USA). "In a noisy and hectic critical-care environment, the superior auscultatory characteristics of this scope give me the versatility and ability to make more precise and effective clinical decisions.”
