Computed Radiography for Mammmography

According to the terms of a long-term supply agreement, Siemens Medical Engineering (Erlangen, Germany) will offer its customers computed radiography (CR) technology from Fuji Photo Film Co. (Fujifilm, Tokyo, Japan) as part of its full-field digital mammography (FFDM) solution worldwide. Siemens notes it will be the only manufacturer now offering CR for mammography.

Fuji's CR technology is well established and with new dual side reading and 50-micron reading technology, it will be applicable for mammography. The new technology will allow increased x-ray information to be captured and then read from both sides simultaneously, resulting in higher-quality images. CR-based FFDM can be easily upgraded on Siemens' Mammomat 3000 and 3000 Nova systems, says the company.

"Our strategic decision for CR-based FFDM solution was driven by our determination that flat detector technology still has to mature for mammography applications,” said Dr. Frank Anton, president, special systems division of Siemens Medical Engineering. "It is of the utmost importance that we offer our customers a cost-effective and secure investment, enabling them to benefit from the advantages of digital imaging.”
