Shaver Handpiece for Arthroscopic Surgery

A new shaver handpiece is designed for use in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee, hip, and small joints.

The handpiece offers enhanced power and torque performance and features such ergonomic features as hand controls for easier handling and application. As new arthroscopic techniques and technologies are developed and advance to other parts of the body, particularly below the knee, the need for medical instruments with enhanced power and performance is increasing as well.

According to recent research commissioned by Smith & Nephew Endoscopy (Andover, MA, USA), the handpiece's developer, most surgeons desire increased power over all other shaver characteristics. The device, called PowerMax, will enable surgeons to resect both bone and soft tissue without overheating. To reduce fatigue during surgical procedures, the handpiece was designed and manufactured to weigh about 50% less than traditional shaver models.

"With the introduction of the PowerMax shaver handpiece, surgeons now have the benefit of additional power and torque without any compromise to ergonomics, comfort, and weight,” noted John Konsin, vice president, marketing, Smith & Nephew Endoscopy.
