Surgical Instruments for Phlebectomy

A new line of surgical instruments is designed for use in performing ambulatory phlebectomy, the mini-surgical removal of varicose veins.

The VarEx instruments come in an array of tip styles and different sizes and shapes to accommodate a variety of surgical techniques and physician preferences, and they also allow physicians to enhance their technique. All are manufactured of high quality surgical stainless steel and are reusable.

Ambulatory phlebectomy is frequently performed at the same time as saphenous vein procedures such as vein stripping surgery. The new instruments provide a complementary solution to the Closure system, a radiofrequency device used in treating saphenous vein reflux, often the cause of varicose veins. In this procedure, a thin catheter is inserted into a diseased vein to deliver radiofrequency energy to heat the vein, causing it to collapse and seal as the catheter is slowly withdrawn. Like the Closure procedure, ambulatory phlebectomy can be performed with local anesthesia as an outpatient or in a doctor's office. Both the Closure and the VarEx line are the products of Vnus Medical Technologies (San Jose, CA, USA).
