New Repair for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

A new endoscopic treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been developed that is faster and will cost less than current treatments. The repair system is now in clinical trials.

Called the Gatekeeper Reflux Repair System, the new catheter-based treatment will enable an endoscopist to perform an outpatient, nonsurgical, anti-reflux procedure in the endoscopy suite in 60 minutes or less. The system was developed by Endonetics Inc. (San Diego, CA, USA). The company says the Gatekeeper System is expected to reduce treatment costs associated with lifelong drug therapies or surgical reflux repair. Endonetics has developed another catheter-based system for the diagnosis of GERD.

"Although it is early in the investigation, we have been very impressed with the Gatekeeper Reflux Repair System's performance. It has been simple to use and quite accurate in its delivery capabilities,” said Paul Fockens, M.D., director of endoscopy at the University of Amsterdam, Academic Medical Center, and principal investigator of the multicenter study in Europe.
