A new needle for use in skin closure following surgery is based on new technology that produces sharper and stronger needles designed to provide a surgeon with more control.Posted on 27 Apr 2004
The needle, called MultiPass, stays sharp after each pass. In a comparison with other needles, MultiPass needles remain 44-58% sharper than competitive skin closure needles. The new technology also produces needles that are two times more resistant to bending than other needles. They have an innovative coating and a new design that minimize the amount of penetration force needed for each pass.
"Through continuous innovation in the areas of needle material, geometry, and coating, Ethicon Products has developed needles which consistently outperform competitors in the areas of strength, sharpness, and control, pass after pass,” said Felmont Eaves, M.D., a board-certified surgeon at Charlotte Plastic Surgery (NC, USA).
Ethicon Products (Somerville, NJ, USA) produces needles for skin closure and cardiovascular needles, targeted for plastic and cardiovascular surgery, respectively. Premium skin closure needles are used by other specialties as well, including general surgery and obstetrics/gynecology.
