Shock Wave Therapy for Elbow Tendinitis

An early analysis of data on clinical trials involving an extracorporeal shock wave therapy system has provided promising results on the use of the system for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis, often referred to as tennis elbow.

Clinical testing of the shock wave therapy system has been underway since 1999 and is continuing at three U.S. sites. The system, called Sonocur, is from Siemens Medical Systems (Erlangen, Germany). Chronic tennis elbow is a tendon irritation caused by repetitive motion of the hand and forearm. The Sonocur system has been marketed for the treatment of chronic pain disorders in Europe and Canada.

"Although continued testing of the Sonocur system is necessary, we are very excited about these preliminary results and believe that they may be the first step in providing evidence that shock wave therapy is a viable alternative for patients who have been nonresponsive to conventional therapies,” said Anne Marie Keevins, division manager, special products business unit of Siemens.
