Tool Tracking Software for Surgical Operating Microscope

Two medical companies have recently collaborated to develop a new
navigation system that focuses the surgical microscope precisely to the region of interest (ROI), right where the surgeon works. Working in combination with the tool tracking capabilities of this new technique, the optical axis and focal place of the microscope follows in any lateral relevant direction of the tip of a defined navigated tool (i.e., forceps, coagulator).

The collaboration between Leica Microsystems (Heerbrugg, Germany)
and BrainLAB (Redwood City, CA, USA) has resulted in the new navigation system, called Vector Vision 7.0, which requires surgical operating microscopes that are equipped with a robotic function and adapted to the IGS system.

In addition to this software, Leica Microsystemss M520 OH3 and M520 MS3 are also answering the high demands of automatic positioning. With these systems, each movement of the microscope is made very precise, free of oscillation, gentle but fluent, targeted, and controlled.

These new tools provide a significant advantage for the surgeon: hand-free controlling of a surgical microscope. As the microscope continuously follows each movement of the surgical instrument, manually repositioning or focusing is no longer necessary. No button on the footswitch or handles has to be activated or pushed, which leads to more focus on thesurgical procedure itself.
