A new super-absorbent disposable material is designed for use within a clinical environment, especially during surgical procedures, to reduce the risk of infection.Posted on 13 Jul 2005
The super-absorbent core of Mojave is fabricated via a patented process involving the uniform distribution of specially developed super performance polymers (SAPs) in a unique matrix of high-performance fibers. This proprietary trilaminate material changes the fabric of disposable healthcare linens available today. The barrier created by Mojave is completely impervious to blood and body fluids, viruses and bacteria, providing improved protection for the patient and healthcare workers. Linens made of Mojave help prevent cross-contamination from fluid run-off by aggressively trapping fluids and locking them into the super-absorbent core.
Mojave was developed by Microtek Medical Holdings, Inc. (Alpharetta, GA, USA). The company observes that skin is the largest organ in the human body and the first line of defense against the introduction of infection to the body. The presence of moisture makes the skin and tissues more vulnerable to shear and friction, thereby increasing the risk of skin breakdown, pressure ulcers, and infection. During routine surgical procedures, patients are often exposed to fluids from their own blood, irrigation, and prepping solutions. Mojave helps to minimize exposure to moisture and to protect the integrity of the patient's skin by wicking fluids away and locking them into the material. The initial launch of Mojave is in a line of covers for operating room (OR) tables.
According to Microtek, one in every 20 patients in the United States alone contracts a hospital-acquired infection, and 90,000 people die annually from resulting complications. The company is a manufacturer and supplier of innovative product solutions for patient care, occupational safety, and management of potentially infectious and hazardous waste in the healthcare industry.
