Painless Esthetic Skin Treatments

A new aesthetic skin treatment combines broadband light with pneumatic energy to deliver more efficient photons to dermal and epidermal targets, and with significantly less pain.

The Aesthera PPx, manufactured by Aesthera (Pleasanton, CA, USA), is a stand-alone multi-application system where the technology driving the system is embedded in microchips. Pnemopneumatic therapy (PPx) uses personalized single-use disposable tips specifically designed for unique body parts, which are individually customized for different applications. The therapy is indicated for treating sun-damaged and aging skin, including brown spots, redness, and broken capillaries, as well as unwanted hair and unsightly veins. The system has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Through a proprietary sequence of light and pneumatic energy, four to five times less energy is required for effective treatments. Using a pneumatic sequence, the treatment area is stretched to reduce the concentration of absorptive chromophores of blood and melanin. When light is then applied to the skin, the elevated targets, reduced melanin, and blanched dermal vessels allow four to five times more photons to impact the target.

Under negative pressure in the handpiece, liquid on the skin's surface extracts large amounts of heat from the tissue and evaporates it at protective temperatures, creating a safe environment of continual cooling that provides protection to the skin. This cooling mechanism does not require external cooling agents such as cryogen sprays, gels, or costly internal cooling systems, and patients do not need to undergo time-consuming pre-treatment procedures such as applying topical numbing agents or cooling gels.

"With traditional lasers and light based systems, there is a very fine line between effectiveness and collateral damage. Photopneumatic therapy significantly widens this gap by dramatically increasing photon absorption, reducing the overall energy required and widening the otherwise very narrow safety margins,” said Vic Narurkar, M.D., director and founder of the Bay Area Laser Institute in San Francisco (CA, USA).
