Combined Laser Wavelengths Are More Effective

An innovative development in laser technology broadens treatment options for dermatologic vascular conditions and makes them more effective.

The Cynergy workstation, a laser workstation for dermatologic uses made by Cynosure (Westford, MA, USA), is equipped with MultiPlex technology, which enables the rapid sequential emission of two laser wavelengths--a pulse-dye laser and aNd:YAG laser--from the same optical fiber with a short time delay between the two pulses. The time delay increases the safety and effectiveness of laser treatment. The workstation has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In clinical studies, treatments using the Cynergy workstation with MultiPlex technology have shown an increased depth of penetration of energy and improved effectiveness in treating port wine stains, and improved outcomes for facial and leg telangiectasia (spider veins), when compared to treatments using either a pulse-dye laser or a Nd:YAG laser individually.

The use of either a pulse-dye laser or a Nd:YAG laser alone has limits, commented Emil Tanghetti, M.D., clinical professor of cosmetic dermatology at the University of California (Davis, CA, USA). However, when combined, these two wavelengths appear to be effective for treating many vascular lesions such as blebbed port wine stains and difficult facial telangiectasia, which were resistant to treatment in the past. This is a truly innovative and exciting development.
