A three-dimensional (3D) digital vision system incorporates a head mounted display (HMD) that allows the surgeon to focus on the surgical field, supporting a broad range of complex surgical procedures. The Viking Endosite 3Di is an advanced vision system used by surgeons for complex minimally invasive surgery (MIS), with an initial focus on applications in urology, gynecology, bariatrics, and general surgery. A dual, three-chip charge-coupled device (CCD) connected to a high quality stereoscope delivers two high-resolution optical channels with accurate color fidelity. These signals are then passed through a central processing unit that converts the signal to a digital signal transmitted to the HMD, which provides immersive 3D vision, via a three panel liquid crystal display (LCD) with picture-in-picture (PIP) capabilities. An additional 23-inch flat panel display is also integrated into the equipment cart.
The proprietary Infomatix system enables critical clinical images to be viewed in the HMD, and a voice-activated system allows the surgeon to view secondary video and existing diagnostic reference images without leaving the patient. The Viking Endosite 3Di is manufactured by Viking Systems (San Diego, CA, USA).
The Viking 3Di Digital Vision System will be used as an educational tool for European surgeons in a newly established 3D Surgery learning center established at the St. Antonius Hospital (Nieuwegein, The Netherlands) by broadcasting live from the operating room to the auditorium via a fiberoptic cable. This will allow numerous surgeons to be trained simultaneously on the latest laparoscopic techniques with the benefit of 3-D vision on a specialized projection screen, and significantly enhance the learning process.
"MIS is growing rapidly in The Netherlands and throughout Europe,” said Christiaan F.P. van Swol, Ph.D., coordinator for the program on behalf of St. Antonius Hospital. "Viking Systems' 3D System is innovative, economical and allows us to better serve our patients. Our surgeons are delighted by the increased precision and information gained by having
their natural 3D Vision restored during MIS procedures.”
