The MicroThermX-100 Microwave Ablation System (MTX-100) is a compact, mobile system that is indicated for use in the ablation of soft tissues. The system includes a state-of-the-art computer, a microwave generator, single-patient-use disposable applicators, and a proprietary thermistor-based temperature monitoring system. The delivery of microwave energy is managed by time and power parameters set by the operator utilizing an interactive touch-screen monitor allowing him to control the treatment quickly and easily. The MTX-100 provides minimally invasive access to the target tissue and can be used in open surgical as well as in percutaneous ablation procedures, which allows the MTX-100 to be used by both surgeons and interventional radiologists. The system is equipped with the ability to use up to four treatment applicators simultaneously, working intelligently together via a phased array technology to provide larger and uniform zones of ablation during a single procedure. The device is designed as a stand-alone therapy system. The MTX-100 is manufactured by BSD Medical (Salt Lake City, UT, USA), and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Precision-guided RF and microwave systems are used to treat cancer at relatively mild (high fever) temperatures, forcing the tumor into hyperthermia to kill cancer cells and boost the effectiveness of companion treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy, or a combination of both.
