High-Performance Operating Room Lighting Compensates for Shadow Areas

A leading Italian medical company introduced an illumination system suitable for all surgical requirements.

The illumination system composed of the OT-STARLED and optionally the STARLED3 EVO is manufactured incorporating LED (light-emitting diode) technology to produce a clean, cold light with constant-time chromatic render, and free of infrared (IR, heat) rays.

The OT-STARLED produces illuminance at 160,000 lx (self-limited) at a color temperature of 4,900 K, with a steady 95 color rendering index (CRI) value over time. The lamp composed of seventy LEDs positioned in a circle, as seven groups of three LEDs set within seven groups of seven LEDs, generates a 21 to 100-cm light spot. The ACRIS system controls electrical curves characteristic of LEDs through the use of microprocessors to keep a stable performance over time while maintaining a life cycle of 50,000 hours. The system reduces shadows with its brightness adaptor obstacle-finding sensors. These sensors locate the head, shoulders, and hands of the surgeon to provide total in-depth illumination of the surgical field, compensating for the shadow areas created by these obstacles with adjusted illumination. Another innovation is the LIGHT-UP system, which through a beam of light emitted from the top of the lamp provides variable lighting levels suitable for minimally invasive surgeries, among others.

The OT-STARLED has an ergonomic design; it is easily positioned by the operating room staff, and is compatible with laminar-flow patterns in the operating room. The system also features I-SENSE controls, which are able to remember operational parameters, simplifying changes among standard, automatic, and ambient working modes. The system can also accommodate multimedia additions such as a video camera integrated to the center of the light head or positioned on a separate arm with a universal serial bus (USB) interface.

The OT-STARLED may be associated with the STARLED3 EVO acting as a satellite lamp. The STARLED3 EVO, which shares general attributes with the OT-STARLED, is controlled by double board microprocessors to regulate light-intensity management. The lamp is compact and easily managed, and its design allows for fast cleaning.

The OT-STARLED and the STARLED3 EVO are manufactured by ACEM Medical Co. (Bologna, Italy), a company specializing in medical lighting and the X-ray sector.
