A no contact, disposable safety sheath covers blades and allows activation of the scalpel with just one hand, improving protection for scrub techs, nurses, and surgeons.

The ThumBlade scalpel system features an innovative independent thumb activation mechanism which enables one-handed blade launch by right or left handed practitioners, with no contact with the exposed blade; this activation affords an easy, natural opening motion while keeping the other fingers out of the way. The safety sheath is made from high quality ABS composite plastic with a completely flat and smooth top, providing a stable platform for better control during the procedure. The stainless steel handles in the system are back-weighted and pre-sterilized for first use, and can be re-sterilized for additional use. The handles are available in both #3 and #4 fitments.

The blades themselves are supplied in a color coded packaging and dispenser box; each ThumBlade scalpel blade is also color coded by size in coordinated sheath and package colors, making it simpler to choose the right size blade. The two-tier tear-away dispenser box enables the practitioner and team to easily see the blade size, and to pick as many individual packages as needed. The ThumBlade scalpel system is a product of Precision Medical Devices (Marlboro, NJ, USA).

"Our system's performance is predicated on our extra-sharp blades and reusable stainless steel handles; in addition, and this is what makes it so significant, because of our creative pricing program it has the usage cost of throw-away plastic handle scalpels,” said John R. Inzero, director of sourcing and development at Precision Medical Devices. "Many end users, such as hospitals and clinics in cities and small towns, cannot afford, because of budgetary constraints, the safety systems currently on the market. But our new line of safety scalpels and handles is not only unique; it is also economical for all institutions and practitioners. Combined with our exclusive activation mechanism and overall quality, this product is in a class by itself.”
