Single-Use Colonoscopy System Improves Safety and Hygiene

A novel disposable endoscope is hygienically safe and employs a computer-assisted, gentle advancement technology to protect the colon.

The invendoscope SC20 single-use colonoscope contains a working channel that is neither pushed nor pulled, but uses instead a computer-assisted gentle drive technology that reduces forces on the colon wall. The highly flexible endoscope has an electrohydraulic deflecting tip (including camera head) and an inverted sleeve, which causes the invendoscope to expand just below the deflection (when advancing), and to shrink when retreating. Therefore, no relative movement to the colon wall exists and, in combination with its very small bending diameter, the inverted sleeve technology reduces the forces exerted. Alpha loops and difficult colon sections can thus be easily passed.


The device is delivered ready-for-use and after the examination, the complete endoscope, including camera head, is discarded. Since each patient has his own personal invendoscope for their examination, no cleaning and disinfecting of the device is required, significantly reducing potential cross-infection risk. No reprocessing also simplifies the workflows in the endoscopy department or office, and also minimizes future investments into endoscope cleaning and disinfecting equipment.

All endoscopic and software functions can be quickly and easily performed using an ergonomic handheld control unit that offers joystick control for the deflection of the endoscope tip, buttons for driving the invendoscope SC20 forward and backwards, function keys for insufflation, rinsing, and suction, and image documentation and editing proprietary software. The invendoscope SC20 single-use colonoscope is a product of Invendo Medical (Kissing, Germany), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
