A new full high definition (HD) surgical camera system offers high quality image capturing at a low cost.

The Olive Medical HD surgical camera captures images at a full 1080 pixel resolution, rather than relying on postprocessing extrapolation to get up to full HD. The camera system uses a combination of superior technology, vertical integration, and lean development, providing a true HD image with substantial saving to the end-user, and is also ten times faster than similar systems due to the native HD acquisition, according to company claims. In addition to cost savings, a five-year replacement warranty for the camera head is offered.

The complete system includes the TCK1 HD Camera Head and 24 mm coupler with three fully programmable control buttons and a lightweight ergonomic design; the OVB1 Camera Control Unit, with a unique smart-phone like touch-screen interface with full 1080p video outputs, two DVI and two 3G/HD-SDI outputs; and the OHD1 Surgical Display. The system also has integrated storage of 40 HD images that reduces the need for a separate capture, and is compatible with all other systems on the market. The Olive HD surgical camera is a product of Olive Medical (Salt Lake City, UT, USA) and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“What makes Olive’s system unique is that it extracts the costs without sacrificing quality. From the color reproduction, image sharpness, and clarity – no detail was spared,” said Joshua Talbert, CEO of Olive Medical. “All other HD systems available today do not acquire the image in native 1080p resolution but rather employ postimaging processing to upscale and modify the image to achieve HD rates.”
