A novel small curved jaw instrument addresses surgeons’ needs by offering a low-temperature profile and minimal thermal spread to surrounding tissues.Posted on 27 Sep 2012
The LigaSure curved, small jaw, open sealer/divider surgical instrument is intended for use in for ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgical procedures, head and neck procedures such as thyroidectomies and parotidectomies, plastic and reconstructive procedures, and additional open ENT procedures. It can also be used for urologic procedures and thoracic procedures. The integrated cutting mechanism is independent of the sealing component, leaving critical cutting decisions in the surgeon’s hands. The multifunctional design also provides for blunt dissection and minimizes the exchange of instruments compared to mechanical ligation, especially in confined surgical spaces.

The device is powered by the proprietary ForceTriad energy platform, giving surgeons a continuous output of energy, monitoring the tissue, and making real-time adjustments 3,333 times per second to seal vessel walls. The ForceTriad combines with proprietary TissueFect sensing technology with hand or foot activation and an integrated cutting mechanism to provide consistent, controlled tissue effects, sealing and cutting up to and including 7 mm vessels, pulmonary vasculature, lymphatics, and tissue bundles. The LigaSure small jaw instrument is a product of Covidien (Dublin, Ireland), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“This is a major milestone in recognizing the LigaSure small jaw instrument as an effective open surgical device and significantly expands its use throughout the surgical community. We believe surgeons will see it as a valuable tool for ENT procedures,” said Bryan Hanson, group president of surgical solutions at Covidien. “LigaSure technology has set the industry standard in vessel sealing since 1998. This technology has been used in millions of surgical procedures worldwide and is supported by an every growing body of evidence-based research.”
