Surgical Access Device Protects Wounds

An innovative access device protects the wound site from contamination, and provides excellent exposure and visualization.

The Covidien SurgiSleeve is a cylindrical shaped wound protector used to keep incisions open and to protect the surrounding tissues from surgical site infections (SSI) during both open and minimally invasive surgery. The device is composed of three sections: a proximal blue ring that is easy to roll down to adjust to different thicknesses of the abdominal wall; a tough, tear-resistant wound protection sleeve that forms a barrier to the surrounding tissues; and a flexible grey ring inserted into the wound and is easily removed.


During placement, it is important that the surgeon make sure that there are no residual tissues trapped between the device and the abdominal wall. The Covidien SurgiSleeve is a product of Covidien (Dublin, Ireland), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
