3D Surgical Microscope Provides Enhanced Video Capabilities

A new line of surgical microscopes offers easy three-dimensional (3D) recording and video editing, extending existing technologies used in the operating room (OR).

The Leica Microsystems M720 OH53D neurosurgical microscope is equipped with TrueVision technology, a patented intelligent, real-time, surgical visualization, and computer-aided guidance platform for recording surgery in 3D and streaming a live video feed of the surgical field, making it an unparalleled teaching tool. The system also incorporates a digital system that allows surgeons to control the 3D recording functions, without interrupting the workflow, via the microscope hand and foot controls. The platform is also upgradable to support future surgical guidance applications.

Other features of the OH5 neurosurgical microscope include an optical head designed along a horizontal plane, making it more compact. New binocular tubes are designed with an inclination range of 115°, which allows each individual to work in comfort, while the Butterfly-Binoculars feature enable the eyepieces to swing to a second viewing plane. The SpeedSpot microscope positioning feature allows one reference point for all surgeons and video, resulting in optimal parafocality, sharp images, and increased comfort for surgeons. The M720 OH53D neurosurgical microscope is a product of Leica Microsystems (Wetzlar, Germany).

TrueVision, developed by TrueVision 3D Surgical (Santa Barbara, CA, USA), is a stereoscopic high-definition visualization system that displays the surgical field of view in real-time on a 3D flat-panel display in the operating room. It is used for neurosurgery, ophthalmology, spine, orthopedic, ear, nose and throat (ENT) and any surgery that requires a surgical microscope.
