Easier Suturing After Laparoscopic Procedures

A new device for suturing port and trocar incision sites following minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures helps reduce pressure around the site.

The neoClose device eliminates the need for graspers or retrievers during the suturing process by delivering proprietary AutoAnchors into the abdominal wall, which serve as both anchors and sutures in one. The device consists of an AccuGuide that aids the accurate delivery of a bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid (PGA) suture and the attached bioabsorbable AutoAnchors using the trocar as the reference point, and can be deployed under full pneumo/inflation in three simple steps, in under one minute.

The AutoAnchors are tied at the end of the procedure, helping reduce the pressure around the site, compared to the traditional closed loop approximation of the incision. By using the device, surgeons can swiftly and easily close the incision wound and offers a consistent positive outcome to both the surgeon and the patient, avoiding the clinically significant pain due to nerve injury associated with 5% of closed loop approximation procedures. The neoClose device is a product of neoSurgical (Galway, Ireland), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Current closed loop approximation methods can be technically challenging, requiring user skill and do not always result in consistent outcomes for the patient.
