A micro vascular plug (MVP) system helps reduce the rate of blood flow in the small vessels of the peripheral vasculature. Posted on 14 Jan 2014
The MVP-5 micro vascular plug system is designed to occlude vessels quickly and predictably, with a single device delivered via a microcatheter. The self-expanding, ovoid shaped device is comprised of nitinol and is secured at both ends with platinum marker bands and a PTFE partial cover, with the proximal marker band attached to a wire that pushes the device through a microcatheter to the intended treatment site. The delivery wire detaches from the MVP device by electrolytic means after deployment with the proprietary detachment system.

The MVP system is packaged as a single unit with the MVP device, the introducer sheath, and the detachable delivery wire; the MVP device itself is fully re-sheathable to facilitate accurate placement. The proprietary detachment system is intended for multiple uses, and as such is not part of the MVP system. The MVP system and detachment system are products of Reverse Medical (Irvine, CA, USA), and have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“Our first procedure with the MVP-5 was impressive, and consistent with our prior experience with the MVP-3, resulting in accurate and immediate vessel occlusion upon deployment,” said assistant professor of interventional radiology Rahul Patel, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital (New York, NY, USA). “The device tracked easily through tortuous anatomy, allowing for more precise control than conventional embolization coils.”
“The MVP-5 system represents an important addition to the MVP product line worldwide, soon to be followed by an MVP-7 and MVP-9, addressing a broad spectrum of peripheral vascular anatomy,” said Alex Thomson, vice president of global sales at Reverse Medical. “Physician enthusiasm from MVP-3 clinical use created strong demand for larger sizes, and we quickly responded. The MVP is a platform technology with broad clinical utility for peripheral and eventual additional indications throughout the body.”
