Bunion Correction Kit Addresses Underlying Skeletal Deformity

An innovative mini plate and suture implant system realigns and stabilizes the metatarsal bones to correct Hallux Valgus deformity.

The KISSloc Suture System consists of a low profile suture plate, an arrow plate, and a self-cinching ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) suture assembly that corrects bunions by reducing the intramedullary angle between the first and second metatarsal bones. Use of the system allows more accurate bone tunnel placement by utilizing smaller (1.2 mm) bone tunnels, which significantly reduce the stress on the bone caused by larger holes, while the low profile plates distribute the load across a larger area. In addition, a more robust suture improves the ease of final implant placement, resulting in a more consistent repair.

During the procedure, the suture is hooked around the arrow plate and passes through the two holes in the plate to form the entire assembly. In addition, bunion correction can be achieved by using just one KISSloc construct, instead of two separate suture bridges, creating an easy to use, cost effective system. The system is sterile packaged, with completely disposable instrumentation, further minimizing the risk of infection. The KISSloc Suture System is a product of Arthrosurface (Franklin, MA, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“When we looked at the shortfalls in the existing designs we knew that if we could reduce the size of the bone tunnels while providing a stronger suture construct, we could improve patient outcomes considerably,” said Carl Hasselman, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC, PA, USA). “However, I think the most important feature is how we were able to create a self-cinching suture bridge so surgeons can easily adjust the correction angle on each patient individually.”
