Transformative Robotic Platform Advances Spinal Surgery

A novel surgical guidance system combines analytical tools, multiple-source data, precision guidance, optical tracking, intra-op verification, and connectivity technologies.

The Mazor X provides surgical assurance via three main coordinated processes. The first is a suite of software-based tools designed to pre-operatively assess spinal alignment and implement full surgical planning, facilitating a total patient treatment strategy. A key component of the Pre-Op Analytics component is the X-Align module, a combination of biomechanical logic and virtual surgical tools with computerized alignment calculations, intended to streamline the process of creating a holistic alignment plan for each patient.

The second component is Intra-Operative Guidance, which utilizes precision mechanics and a bed-attached, bone-mounted surgical arm to guide surgical tools and synergistic implants according to the Pre-Op Analytics to confirm predictable execution of the surgical plan. The third component is Real-Time 3D Verification, which uses fluoroscopy, visual tracking, or intraoperative imaging systems to confirm execution and reconciliation of the surgical plan. The Mazor X robotic platform is a product of Mazor Robotics (Caesarea, Israel).

“Our pioneering experience in guidance technology, which has been used by hundreds of surgeons to place over 100,000 guided spine implants, has been leveraged in the development of the Mazor X system,” said Ori Hadomi, CEO of Mazor Robotics. “Following our recently formed partnership with Medtronic and the increased market access it provides us, the launch of the Mazor X positions us for accelerated growth and long term leadership in the spine market.”

Mazor entered into two strategic agreements with Medtronic (Dublin, Ireland) in May 2016. The first agreement is a two-stage, multi-faceted, commercial agreement for co-promotion, co-development and, upon meeting certain milestones (such as the unveiling of the Mazor X system), potential global distribution of certain Mazor products. Following the unveiling, Medtronic ordered 15 Mazor X systems for USD 20 million. The second agreement is for an equity investment by Medtronic in Mazor.
