A new laser otology system allows for smooth, individualized and cost effective treatment of varied pathologies in the middle ear.

The Lumenis (Yokneam, Israel) OtoLase Middle Ear Surgery system is intended for the effective treatment of small and sensitive auditory structures in the middle ear with the aid of the company’s AcuPulse CO2 DUO laser system. Otolase uses a combination of multi-use straight and bent handpieces with a grasping mechanism for simple maneuvering and optimal ergonomics, and single use straight and bent tips. All handpieces, shafts, and tip are designed to facilitate an effective operational field.

The small spot size and ultra-thin, highly durable tip provide microsurgical precision during fenestration, predictable tissue interaction, and delicate layer-by-layer tissue removal with minimal thermal spread. Among the procedures the system can perform are debulking and coagulation of vascular tumors, stapedotomy, tympanoplasty, scar tissue and adhesions dissection, and treatment of acoustic neuroma, cholesteatoma, glomus tumor, myringotomy, and tympanostomy. A wide range of accessories allows the laser system to be used for both office and hospital-based procedures.

“With a 50-year history of redefining medical treatments and providing gold standard clinical advances, Lumenis has revolutionized the approach to micro laser surgery with its energy-based technology,” said Tzipi Ozer-Armon, CEO of Lumenis. “By striving to provide innovative tools to improve surgical performance, Lumenis continues to deliver next-generation energy-based solutions for our partners in the medical community and enhance patient care.”

“OtoLase has been engineered for safety and ease of use. The air flow system eliminates the laser plume and facilitates visualization, and the aiming beam ensures target accuracy,” said John McElveen Jr., MD, of Carolina Ear & Hearing Clinic (Raleigh, NC, USA). “The low profile and thin design allows the surgeon to reach the smallest recesses within the middle ear. This enhanced fiberoptic CO2 laser technology has been worth the wait.”

The AcuPulse DUO allows surgeons to seamlessly alternate between fiber and free beam modalities electronically, allowing customized CO2 laser delivery via fiber transmission to an aiming beam, allowing precision targeting of contoured and hard-to-reach anatomy. Using advanced software, free beam laser energy is transmitted via a range of accessories for precision automated microsurgery, with user-defined control over shaped cutting, ablation area, penetration depth, and power delivery modes.
