Suturing Device Improves Surgery Outcomes

A reusable laparoscopic suturing device features advanced endomechanical and curved needle technologies that establish a new standard of excellence in suturing.

The Ethicon Endo-Surgery (Ethicon; Cincinnati, OH, USA) ProxiSure Suturing Device is designed for bariatric, general, colorectal, and gynecology procedures. Features include a curved needle and wrist-like maneuverability to improve suturing precision in tight spaces, thus allowing surgeons to reach the desired angle, control bites, and secure knots. ProxiSure’s curved needle improves a surgeon’s ability to suture a variety of tissue layers, including flat surfaces, as well as have maximum control of the needle during suturing and knot tying, which may reduce the risk of needle loss.

Features include an articulating and rotating distal tip with bidirectional 45-degree articulation and 360-degree rotation; a trigger that auto-rotates the curved needle 180 degrees; a reusable handle with ergonomically positioned knobs to control rotation and articulation of the distal tip; and a flush port for cleaning and sterilization of the device. The ProxiSure Suturing Device is designed to be loaded with a single use cartridge with a curved, taper point needle and a coated Vicryl (polyglactin 910) or Ethibond coated polyester suture.

“With the patient’s health at the forefront of our thinking, we aimed to introduce a suturing device that will help reduce the margin of error in minimally-invasive surgery,” said Niels-Derrek Schmitz, MD, franchise medical director for Ethicon. “Surgeons will now be able to have the same confidence in laparoscopic suturing that they have always had with traditional procedures using Ethicon products.”
