Innovative Planning Software Advances Hip Surgery

A novel software platform provides non-invasive computer navigation, pre-surgical digital templating, case planning, and feedback during total hip replacement surgeries.

The JointPoint (Belleair Bluffs, FL, USA) hip navigation system for intraoperative analysis and digital templating is a noninvasive, surgeon-friendly planning platform that can help reduce possible leg length discrepancies and potential procedural complications during hip replacement surgery by providing both pre-surgical digital templating and real-time, data-driven implant selection protocols, and accurate cup placement in the operating room (OR).

Two important features of the JointPoint hip navigation system are the OneTrial feature, which helps predict optimal implant combinations based on pre-surgical goals using just two images during surgery; and the systems easy integration with the anterior approach, a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) technique that allows the surgeon to work around the muscles, rather than cut through them, in order to access the hip joint.

Pre-planning and real-time features of the system include digital templating for hips and knees; offset and leg length analysis; cup position analysis; intertrochanteric fracture reduction and tip apex analysis; template rescaling; and predictive trial analysis. Technical features include streamlined case planning using the JointPoint calendar for case sharing, case planning, and collaboration; and cloud-based case management via both iPad and Windows versions.

“During hip replacement surgery, physicians strive for optimal implant choices and positioning to improve patient satisfaction by achieving proper leg length, offset, and cup positioning,” said orthopedic surgeon Andrew Cooper, MD, chief medical officer of JointPoint. “JointPoint Hip Navigation System gives surgeons the confidence with real time feedback so they can ultimately help restore patients back to their natural function efficiently while minimizing fluoroscopy. I’m excited about what JointPoint can offer those surgeons whose patients are good candidates for the anterior approach.”
