An innovative surgical instrument allows surgeons to mobilize target anatomy, transect tissue, and seal and cut blood vessels, tissue bundles, and lymphatics.

The Olympus Medical (Tokyo, Japan), PK AIM is an advanced hybrid energy device that combines a bipolar pincette and a monopolar needle electrode in order to easily integrate grasping, dissecting, coagulating, cutting, and sealing functions into one device. The combination of the five functions allows fewer instrument exchanges and can also reduce the need for clips and sutures for site closure, helping the surgeon to decrease surgical procedure times and focus on the surgical site.

The two-in-one device has a pencil-shaped handle with a sliding toggle switch on top that allows the user to select the bipolar pincette or the monopolar needle electrode mode. Device activation is via a pair of buttons placed on top of the handle or via a foot pedal connected to the ESG-400 generator. The generator recognizes the intended purpose of the PK AIM and automatically limits generator settings. For added safety, the slider assures the right button alone can be pressed.

Olympus PK technology is an impedance-controlled bipolar energy system that offers a complete range of multifunctional laparoscopic instruments, each individually designed for a specific application area. When used with ESG-400 generator, the technology provides surgeons with the ability to seal, transect, coagulate, dissect, vaporize, resect, and mobilize tissue all with precision and control from one energy platform.
