Handheld Robotic System Expands Options for Total Knee Surgery

Orthopedic teams vary in their adoption of robotics, with some surgeons favoring intraoperative decision-making and a manual instrument feel, while others rely on preoperative, computed tomography–based planning with robotic guidance.  A new handheld robotic system now offers a bridge between familiar power tools and enabling technology designed to improve consistency in total knee procedures.

Stryker (Kalamazoo, MI, USA) recently announced the limited market release of Mako RPS (Robotic Power System) for Total Knee, introducing Mako Handheld Robotics as an expansion of the Mako platform. The launch adds a handheld option alongside Mako SmartRobotics, the company’s multi-specialty, robotic-arm assisted platform featuring Mako 4. Mako RPS for Total Knee is designed to reach a new market segment and is compatible with Stryker’s Triathlon Total Knee System.

Mako RPS features intraoperative planning and a robotically enabled saw that uses patented active adjustment technology to respond to a surgeon’s hand movements. The saw guides cuts to remain aligned with the surgical plan. The system integrates into existing surgical workflows and provides a familiar cutting experience without the use of cutting blocks.

Built to work with Stryker’s multi-specialty Q Guidance System, Mako RPS joins a comprehensive orthopedic technologies ecosystem designed to offer versatility at the site of care. The Mako portfolio now includes both Mako SmartRobotics and Mako Handheld Robotics with Mako RPS. Stryker highlighed the newest additions to the platform during the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2026 Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
