Thyroid and breast surgeries are often performed in confined anatomical spaces near critical structures, making precise dissection and controlled thermal management essential. As the global disease burden rises, with GLOBOCAN 2022 estimating 2.3 million new breast cancer cases and about 821,000 thyroid cancer cases, operative demand and workflow pressures continue to grow. A new plug-and-play ultrasonic shears device is now designed to streamline open procedures while supporting reliable vessel sealing up to 5 mm.

Reach Surgical, the surgical solutions division of Genesis MedTech, has received CE Mark approval for SOUND REACH Swift, an ultrasonic shears system designed for open procedures, including breast and thyroid surgeries. The single-unit instrument is intended for use in anatomically constrained fields and near critical structures where consistent energy delivery and thermal control are priorities. It is designed for open surgical workflows that benefit from efficient hemostasis and fewer instrument changes.

The technology integrates a customized, lightweight power transducer with a fine curved-tip blade in a plug-and-play design. This configuration enables efficient, consistent ultrasonic energy delivery to support reliable coagulation for vessels up to 5 mm and precise dissection in confined anatomy. By eliminating conventional handpiece assembly as well as separate handpiece management and sterilization, the device simplifies preoperative preparation.

Additional design elements include a forceps-style format based on familiar open-surgery instruments, allowing tissue grasping, dissection, and coagulation with a single device. The compact, lightweight build is intended to improve hand maneuverability and help reduce surgeon fatigue during longer procedures. These attributes are aimed at workflow efficiency in thyroid and breast operations performed in tight spaces where controlled energy delivery and effective thermal management are essential.

SOUND REACH Swift also expands Reach Surgical’s energy portfolio into open surgery by complementing the company’s ultrasonic and advanced bipolar technologies available on the ENER REACH OP9 platform, which supports both energy modalities within a single system.
