New Transvaginal Transducer Improves Imaging for Gynecology and Early Obstetrics

Transvaginal ultrasound is central to gynecology and early obstetrics, where clinicians must balance deep tissue penetration with high-resolution imaging. Switching probes to achieve this balance can interrupt workflow, lengthen exams, and affect patient comfort. Hospitals also need ergonomic solutions that reduce strain on sonographers without compromising diagnostic confidence. Meeting these clinical and workflow needs, a new lightweight transducer combines enhanced penetration, improved resolution, and a wider field of view in a single device.

Royal Philips has introduced the eV14-2v transvaginal transducer for women’s health ultrasound, designed for a broad range of gynecology and early obstetrics examinations using one probe. The transducer aims to streamline exams and support diagnostic confidence while improving the patient experience.

The eV14-2v delivers enhanced penetration, improved two-dimensional resolution, and a wider field of view in a lightweight, ergonomic design. Compared with the 3D9-3v transducer, it provides a 41.7% increase in penetration, a 10% increase in two-dimensional resolution, a 15.8% wider field of view, and a 22% lighter design.

Built specifically for gynecology and obstetrics imaging, the transducer uses PureWave crystal technology to support detailed visualization of anatomy relevant to infertility assessment and pelvic pain associated with conditions such as endometriosis and fibroids. Its two-dimensional and color resolution also support detection of fetal abnormalities, including delineation of fetal cardiac chambers as early as 13 weeks.

The eV14-2v has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance and is CE marked. It can be used with Collaboration Live to enable real-time remote consultation during ultrasound exams, allowing clinicians to view live imaging, provide guidance, and consult with care teams without requiring patient travel. This capability can help expand access to specialty care in underserved communities and support more efficient care delivery.
