Vacuum Pump Technology Aids Amputees

A system employing new vacuum pump technology helps maintain consistent volume in the residual limb of lower-extremity amputees, increasing comfort and mobility. Called Harmony Socket Enhancement System, the system manages many of the common prosthetic problems of amputees.

A common side effect experienced by amputees, volume loss can lead to an inconsistent fit of a prosthetic socket. The new system maintains a balanced volume in the residual limb, enhances the connection between the limb and the prosthesis, promotes a more natural gait, reduces friction between the limb and liner, and dispels perspiration. The system was developed by Total Environment Control Interface Systems (TEC, St. Cloud, MN, USA).

"The Harmony system is an industry first because it actually manages residual limb volume rather than simply accommodating it,” said Carl Caspers, CEO of TEC. The company specializes in suspension sleeves and postoperative and volume-management products for the prosthetics industry.
