New PACS for Orthopedic Surgeons

A new picture archiving and communications system (PACS) designed especially for orthopedic surgeons was introduced at the annual meeting of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons in Dallas (TX, USA). Feature highlights follow.Posted on 26 Feb 2002
A display station (Impax OT3000) allows orthopedic surgeons to select from a library of digital templates of prosthesis devices and electronically overlay them on an image. Built-in software tools enable the surgeon to calibrate images and match implant templates to the true size. This improves presurgical planning and consultation and allows the surgeon to more precisely measure and scale implants for joint replacement.
A diagnostic center (ADC) employs computed radiography to digitally capture images. It features image-processing software and functionality such as ADC Full Spine/Leg software that allows up to five x-ray images to be seamlessly stitched together to facilitate full body images. This helps the surgeon make angle and distance measurements across image boundaries.
The Talk Station Voice Recognition system, a complete digital dictation system, utilizes continuous speech recognition to let users directly control the entire reporting process, from image interpretation to the final result. Other software and hardware facilitate management of images and information of orthopedic patients, such as Impax Web1000 for intranet distribution of images and presurgical plans. The PACS is the product of Agfa Corp. (Ridgefield Park, NJ, USA).
