A new device designed to remove tissue during transurethral resection of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) uses less traumatic techniques and therefore can be performed on an outpatient basis.Posted on 27 May 2002
The device, called Plasma-Sect Large Loop, works by forming a plasma corona, which rapidly vaporizes excess tissue pressing against the urethra. This type of surgery relieves the obstruction and incomplete bladder emptying caused by BPH. The loop is used in conjunction with PlasmaKinetic Tissue Management System, which provides high levels of pulsed radiofrequency (RF) energy. A study of 40 patients who underwent the procedure showed that 34 were able to return home on the day of surgery and that all 40 patients felt the procedure helped relieve their symptoms. The study was reported in the April 2002 issue of the British Journal of Urology International.
The Plasma-Sect Large Loop and the PlasmaKinetic Tissue Management System are the products of Gyrus Medical Ltd. (Cardiff, UK).
