New Coronary Stent System

A new coronary stent system features Tandem Architecture, designed to offer uniform vessel coverage, good radial strength, and acute angiographic results. The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The heart of the system is the Express stent, a laser-cut, balloon-expandable stent that integrates short, thin elements for flexibility and conformability with long, wide elements designed to enhance radiopacity. The Express2 combines the Express stent with Maverick balloon catheter technology, making for easier tracking. A hydrophilic coating is designed to reduce friction. The system was developed by Boston Scientific (Natick, MA, USA).

The company says its Express stent technology has potential for future use in a broad range of applications, including peripheral vascular and neurovascular uses in addition to coronary uses. Boston Scientific also plans to use the Express2 system as the platform for its Taxus drug-eluting program.

"The combination of the Express stent with the Maverick catheter is a major step forward in stent performance,” said Dr. Maurice Buchbinder, director of the Foundation for Cardiovascular Medicine, Scripps Memorial Hospital (LaJolla, CA, USA). "In my experience with Express2, I have found its delivery to be truly effortless.”
