Pre-tied Knot for Cardiac Catheterization

A new pre-tied knot is designed to quickly stop the bleeding after cardiac catheterization by providing a secure closure at the puncture site in the femoral artery.

Many doctors consider tying the knot after cardiac catheterization the most difficult step of the procedure, although many hospitals still rely on manual compression and the body's natural clotting ability for vessel closing. Manual compression can take up to 45 minutes per patient. The new pre-tied knot helps reduce vessel closure time, which speeds patient recovery and shortens time in the hospital. Called Perclose A-T, the closure system is the product of Abbott Laboratories (Abbott Park, IL, USA).

"I like the security of the stitch, and because the knot is pre-tied, Perclose A-T lets me close the artery quickly and easily, leaving nothing inside the vessel,” said Richard Fortuna, M.D., Ph.D., co-director of the cardiovascular laboratory at Scripps Memorial Hospital (La Jolla, CA, USA). "My patients have started to ask for the product by name, because they know it allows them to leave the hospital sooner and resume their normal activities.”
