Sealant Prevents Post-Surgical CSF Leaks

A new sealant serves as an adjunct to dural closure for the prevention of postsurgical cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks.Posted on 09 Jun 2003
Results of a clinical trial showed that the sealant was both safe and effective, with a 100% success rate in sealing the dura intraoperatively and a 96% postsurgical leak-free rate in patients meeting the criteria for the study. The sealant, called DuraSeal, is the product of Confluent Surgical, Inc. (Waltham, MA, USA). The company develops products based on its platform technologies of in-situ polymerized biomaterials and associated delivery systems.
"Its distinguishing feature includes the immediate, watertight seal, even when applied in difficult-to-reach areas,” said principal investigator Professor J.A. Grotenhuis, M.D., Ph.D., chairman of the department of neurosurgery at the University Medical Center in Nijmegan (The Netherlands). "The ability to create a consistent seal gives me a higher level of confidence in CSF-leak prevention vs fibrin glue when performing dural closure.” Dr. Grotenhuis is recognized for his expertise in neurosurgery and experience with surgical sealants.
The results of the clinical trial were presented at a symposium of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in San Diego (CA, USA).
