Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy Systems

New minimally invasive breast biopsy systems provide a tissue sample similar to that provided by open surgical biopsy but without the surgical procedure. The systems were launched at the annual meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons in Atlanta, GA (USA).

The systems, called EnCapsule Xtra and EnCapsule Precise, are the same except that EnCapsule Precise offers optimized dimensions for stereotactic applications. The basic system is comprised of a 6 mm biopsy device capable of excising, capturing, and extracting an intact 2.5 cm diameter tissue sample. A proprietary collection mechanism employs a radio frequency (RF) scalpel in vivo that cuts, captures, and completely isolates the targeted tumor and margin. The systems, from Rubicor Medical, Inc. (Redwood City, CA, USA) have been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"The EnCapsule device is unique in that it will appeal to not only the surgeons and radiologists but also to pathologists who prefer a single contiguous specimen similar to that provided by open surgical biopsy,” said Ken Bloom, M.D., medical director at US Labs (Irvine, CA, USA). "In the event that cancer is found, important prognostic information is preserved with this approach, which makes it easier for oncologists to formulate recommendations.”
