Huber needles pose a high risk of injury due to the rebound injuries that can occur when removing the needle from an intravenous port. Because they are often used for venous access in AIDS/HIV patients, they pose a particular risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens. A new infusion set, called Surecan Safety Huber Needle Infusion Set, incorporates patented passive safety clip technology designed to minimize accidental needlesticks when accessing subcutaneously implanted ports. A stainless steel safety clip automatically shields the needle tip as it is withdrawn from the base plate.
"Passive design technology is one that automatically engages without the clinician needing to do anything other than normal protocol,” noted Caroll H. Neubauer, chairman and CEO of B. Braun Medical, Inc. (Melsungen, Germany), the developer of the new infusion set. "It simplifies the process and helps ensure compliance to protect healthcare workers and their patients from exposure to dangerous blood-borne pathogens.”
