A new system designed for heel wounds uses contour foam and dressings that fit the shape of the typical foot for optimum use of negative-pressure wound therapy.Posted on 22 Aug 2003
The new dressing is easy to use because it is contoured and simple to apply, quickly creating a seal. Reticulated cells evenly distribute negative-pressure therapy across the wound bed. Hydrophobic dressing material enhances exudate removal to help promote healing. The dressing, called GranuFoam Heel Dressing, is the product of Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI, San Antonio, TX, USA) and uses the company's Vacuum Assisted Closure Therapy. This system helps remove interstitial fluid and infectious materials, allowing tissue decompression. By providing a closed, moist wound-healing environment, the system promotes flap and graft survival as well.
"Because foot ulcers run a high risk of infection, it is necessary that they heal quickly,” said Wayne Schroeder, M.D., vice president and medical director for KCI. "The V.A.C. Therapy GranuFoam Heel Dressing helps to promote the healing process and reduce the chance of infection.”
