Coaptation Products Aid Tensionless Repair of Severed Nerves

Two products derived from porcine submucosa extracellular matrix (ECM) allow close approximation of severed peripheral nerves and provide protection during the healing process.
The AxoGuard Nerve Connector is a tubular, multilaminar ECM product with an open lumen in which the severed nerve ends are placed, typically used to align and connect nerves with less than a 5 mm gap between the severed ends. The AxoGuard Nerve Connector material allows the body's natural healing process to repair the nerve by isolating and protecting it during the healing process, letting autologous cells incorporate into the ECM and remodel and form a tissue similar to the nerve epineurium.
The AxoGuard Nerve Protector is a multilaminar ECM that is used to wrap and protect injured peripheral nerves and reinforce coaptation sites after surgery, isolating the nerve during the healing process and preventing soft tissue attachments. Similarly, the patient's own cells incorporate into the ECM to remodel and form a tissue similar to the nerve epineurium. It is provided sterile, for single use only, and in a variety of sizes to meet the surgeon’s needs. Both the Nerve Protector and Nerve Connector are products of AxoGen (Alachua, FL, USA), and have received the European Union CE marking.
