Disposable Laryngoscope Handle Combats Cross-Contamination

An innovative single-use laryngoscope handle with fiber optic illumination reduces infection risk during intubation.

The Rusch DispoLED Laryngoscope Handle features a sturdy construction, an ergonomic grip, and a bright, focused (nondispersed) light emitting diode (LED) light source that provides optimal light output during intubation procedures. A disposable design helps reduce cross-contamination risk and eliminate the hidden costs associated with reusable products, such as cleaning, sterilization, and repeated handling of laryngoscope handles between different patients. The battery housing design also renders the device inoperable if it is opened and the battery removed.

The Rusch DispoLED Laryngoscope Handle is packaged individually in a preformed tray to protect the integrity of the light source and preloaded batteries. With a validated shelf life of three years, the handle can be safely stored for long periods and will be ready to use straight out of the package. The handle also can be safely integrated with other compatible fiber optic systems, thus allowing it to be easily integrated into many existing laryngoscope systems, reducing the risk of incompatibility. The Rusch DispoLED handle is a product of Teleflex (Limerick, PA, USA).

“We believe no one should be concerned about cross-contamination during intubation,” said Cary Vance, president of Teleflex anesthesia and respiratory. “This technology is designed to help remove the financial barrier to reducing the risk of cross-contamination during intubation and focus instead on improving patient safety.”
