Diagnostic Cardiac Stimulator Offers Distinct Sensing Channels

A new heart stimulator anticipates the needs of physicians, making it as easy as possible to stimulate the heart.

The Biotronik Qubic Stim is a universal heart stimulator (UHS) that offers a combination of touch screen and hard key controls to control personalized, multichannel stimulation protocols via easy-to-use menus. The Qubic Stim is the smallest such device Biotronik has developed—about half the size of the previous UHS generations—and due to its small footprint, modular design, and liquid crystal diode (LCD) display, physicians and electrophysiologists are able to integrate it into current catheterization lab practice.

Based on an established layout with essential features from previous UHS device generations, the single-layer interface control, physicians can implement personalized protocols that anticipate their needs, making it as easy as possible to stimulate the heart at various intervals, thus helping to determine Wenckebach cycle length, among other parameters. The Biotronik Qubic Stim is a product of BIOTRONIK (Berlin, Germany), and has received the European Community CE marking of approval.

“I am very pleased to see that Qubic Stim, which I had the opportunity to use during a market observation, has now received CE approval,” said Leif-Hendrik Boldt, MD, of Charité Campus Virchow (Berlin, Germany). “Having steady control over the heart’s rhythm is important to a successful cath lab practice. An easy-to-use, multichannel stimulator, Qubic Stim can be easily integrated into my practice, ultimately benefiting my patients.”

“Qubic Stim represents an excellent compilation of features that have been developed over three decades, and really takes physicians’ daily needs into account,” said Christoph Böhmer, president International of BIOTRONIK. “We are proud to offer the first in a new series of electrophysiology external devices with enhanced user friendliness.”

A cardiac stimulator is a temporary pacemaker with a single or multiple pacing channels that can be independently programmed with specific parameters to stimulate the heart from various locations, as determined by which electrophysiology catheter the stimulator is sending signals to. Using a direct interface with the monitoring system, the positive and negative poles of a specific electrode inside the patient's heart are used to identify the patient's intrinsic rhythm and pace the heart as needed.
