In a move designed to complete its diagnostics portfolio, Sigma-Aldrich Corp. (St. Louis, MO, USA; ) has acquired Amelung GmbH (Lemgo, Germany) for around US$28 million. Amelung develops automated systems that meet the coagulation testing needs in doctors' offices, in large hospitals, and laboratories. Sigma-Aldrich's Diagnostics Division, which has been the exclusive worldwide distributor of Amelung instruments since 1996, now has full ownership of the company.Posted on 12 Sep 2000
Sigma Diagnostics provides reagents, controls, and instrumentation for testing in the areas of cardiology, chemistry, coagulation, infectious disease, autoimmune disease, hematology, and histology. Sigma-Aldrich develops and manufactures a broad range of biochemical, organic chemicals, chromatography products, and diagnostic reagents.
Combined with our recent entry into the cardiac point-of-care market through the acquisition of First Medical, Inc., Sigma Diagnostics now has the fully integrated systems tools it needs to exploit growth opportunities in two key niche markets, noted David Harvey, president and CEO of Sigma-Aldrich. These fully integrated systems--the first in our company's history--augment our other initiatives and provide focus and real potential for growth.
