Manipal Hospitals, which is India’s third largest healthcare group, caters to around two million patients from India and overseas annually. It recently launched its hi-tech multispecialty block in the state of Goa, with 250 beds and six state-of-the-art operation theaters, 32 high-end medical and surgical intensive care unit (ICU) beds, and an emergency and casualty center. The group has also recently acquired a hospital in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and runs medical colleges in Malaysia, Nepal, Dubai, and Antigua.

“The investment will mainly be used to build hospitals in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, towns and rural areas in the northern and western parts of India,” said Ajay Bakshi, managing director and CEO of Manipal Hospitals. “We are looking at both organic and inorganic route and will fund the expansion with internal accruals and private equity funding.”

Manipal Hospitals clinical staff includes 2,000 doctors and 6,000 nurses, paramedics, and support staff. Apart from education and healthcare, the Manipal Group also owns the drug discovery services company Manipal Acunova, as well as Stempeutics, a stem cell drug research company. Manipal also recently acquired the in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic Ankur Life with its three centers, and is planning to open about 10 more clinics.
