Device for Marking Site of Breast Biopsy

A new device is designed to more accurately mark the site of a breast biopsy after the procedure in order to facilitate later follow-up.

Called the MammoMark, the device incorporates self-expanding collagen with a centrally located titanium clip. When placed in the biopsy site, the device rapidly hydrates and conforms to the size and shape of the biopsy cavity. Within several weeks, the MammoMark resorbs, leaving the centrally placed clip for long-term follow-up. The device is echogenic and radiopaque, allowing doctors to easily and precisely identify the location of the biopsy by using ultrasound or mammography. The device is the product of Artemis Medical, Inc. (Hayward, CA, USA), which develops minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic options for cancer.

imaging, which other devices do not, as well as a means of centrally marking the biopsy site.”
